YOUTH CLASSES

All YMCA Youth programs are tools YMCAs use to accomplish their mission, achieve their vision of building strong kids, strong families and strong communities, and reinforce the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. YMCAs also use an asset-building approach in their work.

Toddlers can also get an early start on hand-eye coordination through a variety of toddler and Pre-K programs.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS

YMCA's are dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable child care. As the nation's largest provider of child care programs, YMCAs provide family-centered, values-based programs to nurture children's healthy development. Well-trained staff provide safe, affordable, high-quality care. Like all Y programs, child care is open to all, with financial aid available.

YMCA preschool care builds on children's natural desire to learn new things and become more self-reliant. Getting along with other children, sharing, taking turns and working in a group are a natural part of playing games or learning a new craft. The Y is an exciting and challenging place, helping preschoolers stretch their skills in mind and body. Pre-Kindergarten preparation is stressed by number and alphabet themes. The values of respect, caring, and honesty are practiced in the classroom. Christian principles are our priority. It is also a safe, comfortable place where children build positive relationships with caring adults.

YMCA After School care makes sure that the time gaps before and after school are filled creatively and constructively. Kids have the chance to express their talents in the arts, sports and other areas of interest, taking advantage of all the Y has to offer. Kids find out what success is all about in an approach that says everybody plays, everybody wins. Time is set aside for tackling homework, with adult help available. Y staff know how to challenge children and listen to them.

AQUATICS

YMCA's have been teaching people to swim for more than a century. In YMCA aquatics programs, children learn to be safe around water and they feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with learning something new. Youth progressive swimming is the YMCA's third most widely offered program nationwide. It uses a problem-solving, guided-discovery teaching approach in a positive, caring environment. Kids can develop lifelong skills that...

YOUTH LEAGUES

A mainstay of YMCA offerings for young people, Y youth sports programs fill kids' discretionary hours with positive activities and caring adult attention. Coaches -- often volunteers, including many parents -- emphasize teamwork and cooperation over winning at any cost, developing good values over developing the next superstar.

AEROBICS

The Decatur County Family YMCA has led community-based health and fitness for more than ninety years. Research continues to support the approach to health that YMCAs have taken since 1891 when Luther Gulick proposed the red YMCA triangle as a symbol of a person's "essential unity -- spirit, mind and body" each being a necessary and eternal part of man.' Participation in Y health and fitness programs offer opportunities for friendship and community, a sense of well-being, self-confidence, and improved mental abilities and cognition -- not to mention the obvious benefits of healthy hearts, lungs, bones and muscles.
